A BLAZE which is believed to have caused more than £1m worth of damage at an industrial estate in Bishop Auckland last week is being treated as arson.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight on Tuesday, March 21 at Furness Windows on the Roman Way Industrial Estate, at Tindale Crossing.

A number of surrounding roads were closed for several hours while firefighters got the blaze under control.

A joint investigation between Durham Police and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service was launched and it has been revealed the incident is believed to have been started deliberately.

Evidence suggests an accelerant may have been used.

Detective Inspector Neil Jones, of Durham Police, said: “This was a major blaze which has caused extensive damage to the premises and surrounding area.

“Initial estimates suggest the damage amounts to more than £1m.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area that night if they saw or heard anything suspicious.”

Witnesses should call Durham Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
