A MAN has denied stealing personal belongings, cash and a charity box from two pubs in Weardale.

John Edward Coglan, 28, appeared from custody at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of non-dwelling burglary.

It is alleged the defendant, of McCullagh Gardens, Bishop Auckland, broke into the Pack Horse Inn, in Stanhope, at around 4am on Monday and snatched a charity box and four cash tins containing money.

Mr Coglan is also accused of breaking into The Bonny Moorhen, across the road, and taking cash, a mobile phone, a set of keys and a handbag.

A trial will be held at the same court on June 15.

He was released on conditional bail which orders him to live and sleep at his parents' address in McCullagh Gardens, to observe a curfew from 7pm to 7am and to not enter Stanhope until his next court appearance.
