A CAR flipped onto its side after colliding with a lamppost in County Durham last night.

Police, firefighters and the ambulance service were called to the B6297 near New Row Farm in Tow Law at 11.05pm.

They arrived to find a car on its side and diesel spilled across the road.

A man and a woman suffered back injuries in the accident and were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham by ambulance.

Two men were also treated at the scene for cuts and bruises.

Durham County Council was called out and covered the diesel spillage with sand.

Firefighters made the car safe and left the area at 1am.
