POLICE are warning residents to be extra vigilant following a burglary at a home in a County Durham village.

A house on Stone Cross, Fishburn, near Sedgefield, was broken into through its rear French doors sometime between 8.20am and 7.15pm.

Jewellery, wrist watches and car keys were stolen, although no vehicles were taken, during the break-in on Tuesday.

In a letter sent to residents this week, police said: “The persons responsible may be ‘checking out’ the locations prior to the crimes taking place so if you have seen any persons/vehicles acting suspiciously previously this also may be of great importance to us.”

People in the area are being urged to be “extra vigilant”.

The letter continued: “In an attempt to reduce crime in the Fishburn area could you please ensure that all windows and doors are kept securely locked, motor vehicles are secured and there are no valuable items left on display.

“Please ensure all garages and outbuildings are also locked.”

Sedgefield Police on Facebook wrote: “The offenders may have discarded stolen items and we would like to return all property to the victims.”

Officers are appealing to anyone with information or CCTV in the area to call 101 and ask to speak to Detective Constable Emma McCabe.
