THE family of a schoolboy left lying injured in the road have called for the hit and run driver to come forward

Jack Salvage was crossing a residential road in Newhaven with friends when he was hit by a car.

The 15-year-old was left in the road as the car which collided with him, possibly a silver Peugeot, slowed down and CCTV footage shows it appearing to come to a stop so that the driver could help the wounded.

But then the vehicle speeds back up and carries on up Chestnut Way in Newhaven.

His step-father, Luke Watson, who lives in the town with Jack, told The Argus that the driver should come forward.

The 29-year-old said: "It's pretty shocking.

"Jack's shaken up about it

"His friends are a bit shaken up as well. To see their mate get hit like that, it's affected all of them.

"We want to get as much out there as we can. It's obviously going to help – it's all we can do."

Jack was put into a safety brace and checked over .

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for a check-up at A&E. His step-father said fortunately medical checks show he has survived with bumps, bruises and concussion.

CCTV footage captured from a nearby house – which can be viewed on theargus.co.uk – shows the moment Jack was upended and left laying prostrate on the road.

It was night-time and Jack and two friends in dark clothing ran into the road from a pedestrianised area – but the law states the driver should still have stopped at the scene of the accident.

Police are seeking witnesses to the collision, which occurred on Monday (December 19) at about 8.20pm.

The driver stopped briefly, saw the boy lying on the ground and immediately drove off, heading towards Valley Road.

Roads policing officer PC Gary Douglas said: "We wish to trace the driver of the car involved and also to speak to anyone who may have seen what happened or who has other relevant information."
