Darius Rucker: True Believers (Humphead Records)

1:52pm Thursday 6th June 2013

MENTION Darius Rucker to the musical world and the majority of fans will name him as lead singer and guitarist with rock band Hootie and The Blowfish. The band charted many times with Rucker writing many of their hits between 1986 and 2001. In 2002 he embarked on a solo career but it was not until 2008 that he found his forte by switching to country music and signing to Capitol Records in Nashville. His first single (Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It), from his first album, made him the first African American to chart a number one song on the Hot Country Charts since Charley Pride in 1963. He is now into his fourth studio album release, True Believers, and has just gone to the top of the Billboard Country Airplay Charts with a song called Wagon Wheel taken from the album. Recently, he was inducted as the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.

With an almost painterly attention to detail and to texture this slowly unfolding single movement work written in 1979 marked a new direction in his music. Widman moves within the glowing colour field of sound with exquisite delicacy and feeling. Captivating listening.

The Concerto for Cello and Strings, written for the cellist Kristina Blaumane, features ravishing playing. The album concludes with the string septet Such Different Paths led by the silver-toned violinist Janine Janson. A deeply-rewarding album.
