PROPOSED changes to constituency boundaries in the North-East are being discussed in the region for the first time.
Representatives from the Boundary Commission for England published controversial plans earlier this year, which would cut the number of North-East MPs from 29 to 25.
The geography of constituencies would also be revised under a 2018 review proposed by Parliament.
Voters were invited to have their say on the plans during a public hearing held in Darlington yesterday, with the Boundary Commission for England hosting its second consultation in the town today (Thursday, November 17).
Sam Hartley, secretary to the Commission, said: “Parliament has set us tight rules about reducing the number of constituencies, and making them of more equal size, and we now need the views of people around the country to help us shape constituencies that best reflect local areas.”
During the hearing, members of the public can speak out in support or opposition to the proposals which are recorded by Boundary Commission for England representatives.
The Mercure Darlington Kings Hotel, in Priestgate, Darlington will host the Commission between 9am and 5pm tomorrow (Friday).
