A MAN has been banned from driving for 12 months after admitting driving while under the influence of ecstasy, cannabis and diazepam.

Dale Williams, of Derwent Road, Ferryhill, also admitted driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, no insurance and failing to surrender to bail.

The court heard that the 23-year-old was driving his Vauxhall Astra along the A167 near Newton Aycliffe in August when he was stopped by police, and failed a roadside drug test.

In mitigation, John Turner said: "My client was driving on that day but at very short notice because his mother-in-law had been admitted to hospital as an emergency.

"She had a burst bowel and he had the message she was there and that his partner was at the hospital. He did make some inquiries of friends but couldn't secure someone to give him a lift, so he made the decision to drive.

"Like many people who drive after a night out drinking, he thought a good night's sleep would mean he was all right. He thought, I have taken drugs the day before but I am fine."

Williams was disqualified for 12 months, fined £120 and ordered to pay £80 for failing to surrender to bail. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85.
