A TAKEAWAY delivery driver was knocked unconscious by robbers who flagged him down in the road and attacked him before stealing his wallet and takings.

The victim was driving along York Hill Road, in Spennymoor, County Durham, when he was flagged down by two men who were in the middle of the road at around 8.45pm on Sunday, October 16.

The 34-year-old driver stopped and one of the men approached his vehicle and asked for directions to Durham. As the victim was giving directions the man punched him in the face and grabbed his car keys from the ignition.

The victim got out of his vehicle and started to fight with the two men, at which point a third man who was sat at the roadside went over to the victim and hit him over the head with an object, which police believe could have been a spanner.

He was knocked unconscious and the three men stole his wallet and takings for the evening.

The victim had to attend hospital with injuries to his head and back.

One of the men who flagged down the vehicle was white, in his early 20s, 5ft 10in tall, skinny and clean shaven and was wearing a blue Under Armour baseball cap and a blue tracksuit top.

The second was described as white, of a similar age and 6ft tall, wearing a black New York baseball cap, a dark bubble jacket and what may have been a dark scarf over his lower face.

The third suspect was younger, perhaps mid to late teens and was white and with short blond hair.

Police believe that a number of vehicles drove past the location whilst the attack was taking place and appealed for witnesses or anyone who saw suspicious activity on York Hill Road to contact them.

Anyone with information is urged to contact PC David Bailey, in the Bishop Auckland serious crime team, with the crime number CRI000 18676.
