RESIDENTS in West Auckland are being warned to be vigilant after several elderly people were targeted by suspected doorstep scammers.

An incident was reported on Wednesday, September 28, involving three women who forcedly sold mats to a resident in the area for £10.

The women are reported to have barged into the property at about 2.40pm and pressurised the resident into buying the mats.

Several other residents also reported that they had been approached by women at the door who told them they were raising funds for a sick child.

Katie Bartle, Durham Constabulary’s police and community liaison officer, said:

“Although no threats were issued by the women, residents were left shaken by how forceful the women were in the sales, and the fact that entry was gained to some of the properties. We would like to take this opportunity to remind people to remain vigilant in relation to doorstop callers.

“We advise people not to buy anything from traders on the doorstep. If you are unsure about anyone claiming to be from a particular organisation, ask to see identification,” she added.

“Please look out for your neighbours.”
