TROPHIES and medals have been handed to a group of special needs players who have been attending sessions at a South Durham bowling club.
Bishop Auckland Bowling Club today (September 22) presented the awards to the group who enjoy the sport with the help of volunteers and support staff.
Lorraine Young was crowned winner of the season and Doreen Robinson was named runner up, while Michael Robson was recognised for his efforts to coach other players.
Dan Newell, sports activator for Durham County Council’s Parklife, said: “This is something different for them to try and the look they get on their faces when we have been out on the green is great. We make it social as well.”
More people have been able to join in games at the club thanks to a specially designed chair for disabled users.
Cllr Sam Zair, who funded the chair, said: “It gives everyone an opportunity to have a go.”
Special needs coordinator Eileen Atkinson handed the awards.
