A DELIGHTFUL smile prompted by a donkey and an ice-cream inspired moment of joy are the top entries in the monthly Winning Smile competition.

The competition was launched to celebrate Darlington Building Society’s rebrand at the start of its landmark 160th year when a smile was incorporated into its new logo.

Every month a ‘winning smile’ is selected out of dozens of entries to win a £50 Marks & Spencer voucher in the adult category and £25 iTunes voucher for the junior category, plus the chance to win a digital SLR camera at the end of the competition.

The adult category winner for July is Louise Stiles, 49, of Northallerton who captured a simple moment of pleasure on her 81-year-old father’s face during a trip to Brymor ice cream parlour in Masham.

She said: “My dad has Alzheimer's and life is difficult.

“His smile from a simple trip for an ice cream makes all worthwhile. A special moment.”

In the junior category, three-year-old Eddie Welsh stole judges’ hearts with his unbridled joy at meeting a donkey at Bamboozles Adventure World in Bishop Auckland.

Mum Jessica, of Newton Aycliffe, said: “My son Eddie loves animals, it doesn’t matter what they are, they make him very happy!”

The competition runs until October 31 and you can see all the entries for each month, and enter yourself, via www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/photos/winningsmile/
