TOURISM chiefs say the August Bank Holiday has been one of the busiest weekends of the year for York – with visitor numbers boosted by several major events.
The Micklegate Soapbox Challenge go-cart race, the Fossgate Festival, Little Shambles Big Art market and Comic-Con at York Racecourse all drew visitors in their thousands to the city.
The visitor centre manager at Visit York, Karen Gordon, said: “It’s absolutely buzzing.
“New exhibitions at York Art Gallery, the National Railway Museum and Jorvik on Tour have also been really popular, not to mention the appeal of York for shopping.”
She said it was too early to give actual visitor numbers but hotels had told Visit York their business had been “buoyant” and she was confident the weekend had provided a confidence boost for the tourism sector.
She revealed that latest statistics showed a 16 per cent monthly increase, year-on-year, in visits to attractions, while hotel occupancy levels in June were over 80 per cent, although this was 1.5 per cent lower than June last year.
