A SMALL village is preparing for its annual Big Weekend.

Shadforth, near Durham, is to hold its three-day annual family festival which starts on Friday, September 2.

More than 40 scarecrows, which this year will be on an Olympics theme, will go up around the village on Friday with scarecrow trail maps available from outside the village hall.

On Saturday, the Village Hall will be open for food from 10.30am to 4pm, with the popular curry contest at noon.

The show tent will open on the village green at 1pm with homegrown produce, arts and crafts as well as classic cars and music from Trimdon Brass Band.

The sports day takes place on Sunday at 1pm, with egg and spoon race, sack race, slowest scooter race and tug-of war with an egg-catching contest as a finale.

Community association chairman Chris Turner said: “Our Big Weekend is packed with fun and activities for the whole family.”
