FOLK art created by miners from crystals and stone is the focus of an exciting craft workshop for children this weekend.

Killhope, an award-winning lead mining museum in Weardale, County Durham, is running the spar box workshop on Sunday, August 28, at 1pm and 3pm.

Miners traditionally created the artwork using minerals and stones they found underground. Youngsters can draw inspiration from the museum’s own spar box collection, before creating their own to take home.

The sessions, priced at £8, are among a number of activities taking part at the attraction in coming weeks.

From Friday, September 9, to Sunday, September 12, the whole family can take advantage of Heritage Open Days, where there is free admission into the museum with a £3 charge for mine trips.

And on Sunday, September 18, food fans can discover more about fungus. Deadly or Delicious? offers a chance to take a fungus foray around the woods to learn which mushrooms are edible and which ones are potentially fatal.

The session, which begins at 1pm and costs £1 for adults and 50p for children, will be rounded off with a barbecue, where people can try their edible finds
