THE organisers of an awards scheme which has honoured Darlington’s sporting heroes for more than four decades are appealing for this year’s nominations.
The Darlington Sports Winners scheme stages its grand final at Darlington College at 6pm on January 25, 2017, and nominations are open in a range of categories.
The scheme is in its 41st year and committee member Brian Dobinson said: “It is incredible that the scheme has continued for such a long time and we want to make sure it carries on towards the half century mark.
“We want to hear about the sporting success stories, young and old, from in and around the town.”
The Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Brian Jones, said: “The Darlington Sports Winners scheme has had many worthy and talented sportsmen and women of all ages recognised for not only their expertise in their chosen sport, but also those who have worked selflessly in the background to help others achieve their goal.
“The scheme showcases the best talent in the borough and is an inspiration to others for the future. I hope it continues for many years to come.”
The scheme is supported by Darlington Borough Council, Sherwoods Vauxhall, Darlington College, Masterskills Foootball Academy, Cleveland Bridge, Tees Valley Sport and Rotary.
Nominations can be lodged between now and December 12 when judging takes place.
The categories are: Primary Sports Achiever; Secondary/Further Education Sports Achiever; Primary School Team Award; Secondary/Further Education Team Award; Under-11s Club/Team Award; Under-17s Club/Team Award; Over 17s Club/Team Award; Service to Sport Under-17s; Service to Sport Over -17s; Disability Sports Award – All Age Groups.
There are also three special awards: The Mulheim Trophy for dedication to sport in Darlington; the Ron Lewis Trophy for the overall winner of winners; and the Lee Vasey Trophy for lifetime of achievement.
