A DOG rescue charity has been handed more than £4,500 from a supermarket following a year of fundraising.

Sainsbury’s, in Sedgefield, selected Coxhoe-based Stray Aid as its chosen charity of the year in 2015 and thanks to staff and customers has raised £4,576.30.

Volunteers from the charity, which has seen 1,400 dogs come through the door in the last year alone, collected the cheque at a presentation at the weekend.

Lee Henderson, of Stray Aid, said the money would go towards an appeal to raise £250,000 which was launched this year to mark the charity’s tenth anniversary.

“It will assist us to purchase and develop our current rented kennels to make them our forever home so that we can continue to do the work that we do for years to come,” he added.

Store management and staff were also joined on Saturday (July 23) by dogs Buster and Austin who are currently up for adoption.

Stray Aid’s mission is to rescue, re-unite or rehome the lost, abused, abandoned or unwanted dogs that are found on streets across the North-East.
