A TUGBOAT captain plied a schoolgirl with alcohol before having sex with her in a motor home on his drive while his partner was at home yards away.

Simon Grainger, 59, was today jailed for four years and eight months, and told by a judge: “You know they were wicked offences you carried out.”

The teenager was given wine, vodka and cannabis before they engaged in sexual activity, and was later found by police “deeply almost comatosed”.

The 15-year-old – described as “vulnerable” at Teesside Crown Court – is now receiving counselling and is in care, said prosecutor Paul Cleasby.

She was one of a group of girls approached by sailor Grainger outside a Middlesbrough pub this year, and asked if they wanted to go to a boozy party.

She got into his car, he took her to a supermarket to buy alcohol, and then to his home near Stockton where they got into the parked-up motor home.

Mr Cleasby said Grainger sneaked into the house to get the keys so his partner was unaware of what was going on, and that showed “a degree of planning”.

Police were called by the girl’s friends and they traced the pair to Penyghent Way in Ingleby Barwick from the registration plate of Grainger’s car.

A body-camera worn by one of the officers showed the teenager in “a deeply comatose, almost unconscious state”, Judge Simon Bourne-Arton, QC, said.

He told Grainger: “You know what you did that night was utterly, utterly unforgivable.” The balding defendant replied: “I know, Your Honour.”

Christine Egerton, mitigating, said he finds what he did “inexplicable”, and said: “He is, I am instructed, completely disgusted with himself.”

Miss Egerton provided a bundle of character references to the court, including ones from his three siblings, two daughters, partner and ex-partner.

“They demonstrate that he is a hard-working man,” said the barrister. “He has had a successful career for many years, and is a committed family man.

“What the references do demonstrate is that what he did was completely out-of-character . . . he is very sorry for what happened.”

Grainger, who appeared by a live video-link from Durham Prison, pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual activity with a child at an earlier hearing.

He will also be on the sex offenders’ register for life, and will be banned indefinitely from having unsupervised contact with under-16 girls.
