PART of Darlington town centre was closed to traffic on Tuesday evening after concerns for someone on the roof of a superstore.

Police and fire were called to Crown Street around 6.15pm after the person was spotted on the roof of TK Maxx and reported to the emergency services.

Two police vans were placed at either end of a stretch of the road outside the William Stead pub and a fire engine was brought in and placed on standby.

A spokesman for Darlington Police said one of its constables had gone onto the roof to talk to the individual and managed to persuade him to come down around 6.30pm.

He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital to be assessed.
