STRINGS of lovingly crafted wool poppies are adorning a town war memorial in tribute to its war fallen.

People in Spennymoor have knitted hundreds of poppies to decorate the town cenotaph for Armed Forces day tomorrow.

Pupils in Rosa Street Primary School’s afterschool knitting club, ran by teaching assistant Andrea Dee, made around 500.

Spennymoor Town Council leader Ian Geldard said: “We have a real respect for the Armed Forces in this town and this is a nice tribute to them.”

Cllr Billy McAloon added: “The town clerk Pauline Waterson came up with the idea and people have really taken it onboard, residents and traders have commented how absolutely brilliant it looks.”

Residents are invited to a drumhead service to mark Armed Forces day at Jubilee Park, Spennymoor, at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday, June 25). Among the guests will be County Durham Deputy Lieutenant Maura Regan.
