THE UK’s former chancellor has visited Durham for some last minute campaigning ahead of the EU referendum tomorrow (Thursday, June 23).

Alistair Darling, Labour’s former Chancellor of the Exchequer was accompanied by Labour’s shadow business secretary Angela Eagle to make the economic case for staying in the EU.

Ms Eagle said: “It’s the most crucial decision in a generation and you can’t reverse it.

“It’s not something we can say we’ve made a mistake. It’s over 100,000 jobs in the North-East which rely on access to the single market and £7 billion of economic activity that’s generated here."

Lord Darling said: “I think there’s a strong positive case to be made.

"We need to focus on the fact that this is final. It’s not a general election where we can come back in five years. Voting out is taking a massive risk and leap in the dark.”

He added: “I think we can win but this is going to very close. Every single vote will count.”

The pair's visit on Tuesday took in Hewlett Packard Enterprise in North Tyneside before their stop in Durham, which included meeting people in Market Place and talking to scientists working at Durham University.

They were greeted by local campaigners from Labour In and welcomed by Durham City MP Roberta Blackman-Woods.

She said: “It was great to have them here today. It’s really interesting walking around to see how many people still have to make up their minds.

“We will campaign right down to the wire and for every last vote.”
