PUPILS from a Darlington primary school who want to restore their local park have received the backing from the town’s MP

Year five students from St John’s Church of England Academy are taking part in the Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award scheme and as part of the project, they want to regenerate the Lascelles Park opposite their school.

The 30 students were given the chance to present their ideas to Darlington MP Jenny Chapman when she visited the school.

Lacey Baldwin, ten, who showed Ms Chapman around the site, said: “The climbing frame has graffiti on it and needs painting and the swings also need to be repaired.”

Ms Chapman told the students: “You are asking for a much safer park to play in and not somewhere that is covered in graffiti. I think there is a very realistic possibility that you will achieve help from the council.”

She also suggested the school could set up a campaign group for the park, similar to the Friends of the Denes that was established in 2006.

The Young Leaders Award aims to empower youngsters to make a difference in their community.
