A STUDENT has told how she lost treasured jewellery when a burglar reached in through an open window.

Mark Duffie was in his way to a supermarket shoplifting spree with friends when he spotted the opportunity.

He stole a three necklaces and some earrings from a jewellery box at the shared property in Church Road, Stockton.

The theft was in the midst of a crime spree in February and March, Teesside Crown Court was told today.

Duffie, 31, has 105 offences on a record which goes back to when he was a juvenile.

His lawyer, Andrew Turton, urged Judge Stephen Ashurst to consider a suspended sentence so Duffie could get help for his drug addiction.

"He has reached the stage in his life where he wants something different," said Mr Turton. "This was an opportunistic and impulsive offence."

Duffie, who has been in custody since March and whose address is listed as Holme House Prison, Stockton, admitted burglary.

The judge jailed him for 12 months after telling him: "You have got a very poor record, mainly for dishonesty, and you are a prolific offender."

His victim said although the jewellery had a monetary value, its sentimental worth was far more after being given to her by loved ones.

In an impact statement, she said the students who live in the house do now not feel safe.
