AN OPEN gardens event with a difference will offer visitors to Richmond the opportunity to relax in the gardens to live music.

On Friday, June 17, 12 of Richmond’s best gardens will be open to the public from 6pm to 10pm, and as dusk falls candles will be lit and fairy lights switched on to add to the atmosphere.

The walk from garden to garden along the cobbled streets of the Georgian market town gives glimpses of views across the River Swale.

Among the gardens are a plantswoman’s garden tucked under the castle walls; historic Temple Lodge with sweeping lawns, mature trees and rhododendrons; and prize-winning Millgate House with an imaginative mix of topiary, roses, clematis and perennials.

Five groups of musicians are providing entertainment in the gardens - Marske Choir with pop and show songs; Mowbray String Quartet performing Mozart; Take4Clarinets; Uno Duo Trio performing Tango to Rossini; and Richmond Classical Guitar Society rounding off the evening in Spanish style.

There is free parking in the market place and some gardens. Tickets with map and list of gardens cost £5 and are available in advance from the tourist information desk in Richmond library and from Millgate House, 3 Millgate, on the evening.
