RAIL enthusiasts have been treated to the sight of the iconic Flying Scotsman steaming through the region.

The crowd-pleasing loco is back on track following a ten-year restoration and enthusiasts gathered at stations along the East Coast Mainline to catch a glimpse of the famous green machine.

Several dozen people headed to Darlington station to ensure they got a good view of the loco which is touring the country throughout the summer.

Today (Tuesday, May 17) the Scotsman is heading south to London Kings Cross, with a stop-off at York.

Next week it will travel throughout the south, with tours from London to Salisbury and the Surrey Hills.

It will be back in the region running from York to Carlisle throughout June before being a star attraction at the Shildon Shed Bash at the National Railway Museum Shildon from July 23 to 31.
