BARNARD Castle School pupils swapped their school uniforms for more patriotic colours and raised hundreds of pounds for charity in the process.

The pupils dressed in red, white and blue for the sponsored non-school uniform day which was linked with the Queen's 90th birthday recently.

Some pupils took the theme to the extremes with one pupil, Alex Tankard, choosing to sport his union flag suit while even the school chaplain, Reverend Darren Moore, joined in the spirit with a discreetly patriotic dog collar.

The day was organised by Kim Hodgson, secretary of the school's charity committee and her team, who chose the Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK as beneficiary of the £460 donated by pupils and staff.

Father Darren said: "The charities committee organises fundraising days throughout the academic year, with only guidance from me. It's very much up to them to develop their ideas and to choose where any funds go.

"They decided that the non-uniform day should have a red, white and blue theme because it was Her Majesty's 90th birthday."
