THE parents of an inspirational six-year-old boy who continues to defy medics with his fight for life have described him as their hero.

Mason Campion, of Hunwick, near Bishop Auckland, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour more than four years ago.

Since then he has spent much of his life in and out of the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), in Newcastle, receiving treatment for the cancer, which has now also spread to his spine.

Doctors have told the family there is nothing more they can do, and last week when the brave youngster fell unconscious, his parents were told to prepare for the worst.

But to the amazement of medical staff, Mason battled back and continues to fight for his life.

His bravery has been so inspirational that when he met his hero Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton in October a genuine friendship blossomed and last month the sportsman urged his social media followers to pray for him.

Since last week the Hunwick Primary School pupil has been enjoying family time in hospital and met his superhero Spiderman.

Mason’s parents, Andrew Campion and Carol Newton, want to thank everyone for their support and say Mason continues to give them strength and hope.

Mr Campion said: “Mason is fighting for his life. Last week he was so poorly his body was shutting down, his digestive system had failed and he was drifting in and out of consciousness.

“The doctors said he didn’t have much time left and that he may not make 24 hours. We had to get him baptised on that day.

“He was dying before our eyes and by his own strength he made it through the night. He was so so poorly. He fought for his life for five solid days.

“He is getting stronger and stronger and it is a miracle he is still here, it really is.

“He has the heart of a lion. For a little boy to come through what he did is so remarkable. He is one of a kind and a lovely, caring little boy who is fighting to live.

“All Mason’s chemotherapy has been stopped but the tumours won’t stop. He is fighting the tumours on his own. We have tried all available treatment and it has failed.

“Mason’s type of cancer ATRT Rhabdoid is so aggressive and has a high death rate. Most people don’t make six months.

“Mason has been fighting it for more than four years and he has been through awful times with surgery, treatments, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, infections and meningitis. You name it he has fought it.

“He is a lovely angel and won’t give in. He gives people hope and strength. Even adults who are fighting cancer look at Mason fighting and it gives them belief not to give up and make the most of life.”

Lewis Hamilton wrote on Facebook: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I inform you all that my little buddy, Mason, is not doing well.

“Please find it in your heart to donate to his family's go fund me page that has been set up to help Masons family with the cost of living in hospital for these past few weeks & it's also been set up to help towards giving him the send-off he deserves.

“God bless you, Mason. Sending you so much love and positive energy. ?#?PrayForMason”?

A fundraising page has been set up to help his family while they are staying in Newcastle and for Mason’s funeral.
