A THEATRE group that supports young people through the arts is looking for new members.

Natural High welcomes seven-year-olds to young adults, including those with learning difficulties, and some members have had difficult childhoods or suffered bullying.

All agree that being part of Natural High has helped boost their confidence and life skills.

The group was formed in 2000 to give children from the Wear Valley and Spennymoor areas a chance to develop their creative ambitions by working with volunteers specialised in song, dance and drama and to provide a place for children to be themselves.

By not holding auditions, it ensures every child has a part in productions.

They also get to work alongside professionals in stage design, sound and lighting and with local musicians who share their expertise and instruments for free.

The group is currently working towards a summer show Round the World.

Maureen Aspey, one of the leaders, said: “Seeing the effect that Natural High is having on the lives of the children we work with is incredibly humbling.

"To see children who barely said a word when they first joined, to then perform in front of proud family and friends is fantastic and long may it continue.

"That’s why we want to encourage more children to join us.”

Natural High meets at St Andrew’s Church, Dawson Street, Crook, in Crook every Friday, from 6pm to 8pm, for details call Mrs Aspey on 07811-166763.
