A PERSISTENT shoplifter has a jail sentence hanging over her after stealing hundreds of pounds worth of alcohol from the same shop within a week.
Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court heard today (Thursday, April 28) that Louise Lynn blamed kleptomania for her offending after stealing bottles of spirits totalling £457.61 from Booths in Ripon last October.
District Judge Martin Walker was sceptical that the condition – which had not been diagnosed – was the reason behind the thefts, particularly after hearing that Lynn sold the alcohol for money.
He noted that the 35-year-old, of Hawthorn Terrace, Ferryhill, was a repeat shoplifter and said he needed to impose a sentence that would make her think twice about re-offending.
She was given a 56-day prison sentence suspended for one year, plus supervision from the probation service and a £100 compensation order.
