A REAL space rocket, chainmail-clad performers dancing with electricity and football-playing robots will be among the attractions at a science event this weekend (April 23-24).

Maker Faire UK 2016 is expected to attract more than 300 crafters, coders and garden shed inventors to the Life Science Centre in Newcastle on Saturday and Sunday,

Glastonbury festival favourites Lords of Lightning will perform and Jason Lane’s Mechanical Sound Sculpture that was used in the London 2012 Paralympics closing ceremony will also be on show.

Ian Simmons, the science communication director at the Life centre, said: “The two-day event is great fun for adults and kids alike with all sorts of different things to try your hand at from traditional crafts to hi-tech hacks.

“The atmosphere is one of collaboration, sharing and experimenting, where you’ll try new things, deepen existing knowledge and have lots of fun. Be prepared to be inspired and don’t be afraid to get stuck in.”

The event is open from 10am to 6pm on Saturday (April 23) and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday (April 24). Entry costs £12 for adults, £7 for children aged five to 17 and is free for under-fives accompanied by a paying adult. Family tickets are also available. For more information, visit makerfaireuk.com
