PLANS to build bungalows on the edge of a village have been approved, against the advice of council officers.

Durham County Council’s planning department had recommended proposals to build two detached bungalows on land north of New Brancepeth, near Durham City, between Plantation View and School House, be refused, because the development would have a detrimental impact on the character of the area and the surrounding countryside.

However, villagers and local councillors supported the proposals, saying the site was part of the village, as it had previously been occupied by rows of terraced houses and the community needed the development.

County councillor David Bell said the scheme was in sympathy with the surroundings and would improve the entrance to the village.

“We need development in the area. It’s part of the village and an essential part,” he added.

Parish councillor Derek Jones said the development would enhance the village “gateway” and look "really nice", there had been no objections from residents and he fully supported the proposals.

Architect Keith Ryder said the site was poor quality land, still marked by old foundations. The applicant has owned the land for 30 years and intends to live on the site, he added.

Cllr Rachel Lumsden said the scheme would be in keeping with the neighbouring settlements and supported Cllr Patrick Conway's motion that outline planning permission be granted, against the recommendation of senior planning officer Chris Baxter.

Durham County Council’s central and east area planning committee, meeting at County Hall today (Tuesday, April 12), unanimously voted to grant permission.
