A MAN has died following an incident involving a taxi on the most important of York’s four main medieval gateways.

Police were called shortly after 2.30am today (Saturday, March 26) to reports of an incident involving a Ford Mondeo taxi cab and a pedestrian.

Ambulance crews were also called and treated the man at the scene.

He was taken by ambulance to York Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The man is believed to be in his 20s and from the Pickering area.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said it was not yet in a position to formally release the identity of the pedestrian.

He said: "Enquiries into the incident are continuing and the man’s family is being supported by specially-trained officers."

Micklegate, which has seen at least half a dozen reigning monarchs pass through its gate, is known for its lively nightlife with many restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the area.
