A FLIGHT which took off from Newcastle Airport destined for Brussels was minutes away from landing when two explosions rocked Zaventem Airport on Tuesday morning.

Flight BM1101, which departed from Newcastle Airport at 6.30am heading for Zaventem Airport was diverted to Liege following the terror attack and has since landed safely. 

Flights BM1102 and BM1108, which were due to land at Newcastle Airport at 10.15am and 9.35pm respectively have both been cancelled.

Flight BM1107 which was due to take off from Newcastle Airport at 5.05pm today has also been cancelled. 

A spokesperson for Newcastle Airport said: "Newcastle International Airport is aware of the situation in Brussels and our thoughts are with all those affected.

"The airport remains open and is operating as normal. We are liaising with the appropriate authorities to ensure the safety and security of our passengers which is always our main priority.

"We can confirm that flight BM1101 from Newcastle to Brussels diverted to Liege and landed safely. We will provide further information about later flights in due course."
