SCHOOLCHILDREN battled it out in a lively Christmas bake off organised by Rotary Club members.

Teams from Hurworth, Polam Hall and Longfield schools in Darlington took part in the two day event, held at Darlington College’s pastry kitchen.

Hurworth were announced champions in a tense final which saw the three teams create Christmas-themed biscuits.

Jade Peverley and Sam Collishaw, both 13, from Hurworth School were declared the winners with their impressive chocolate gingerbread biscuits, decorated as Christmas puddings.

Sam, who inherited a love of baking from his mum and nan, and Jade were delighted with their victory.

Jade said: “I have never won an award before, so I am really excited and happy.”

Darlington Rotarian Sue Campbell, Darlington College communications manager Kath MacColl and Patisserie and Confectionary tutor Jenny Craig were the judges.

Rotary Club President David Heaton was amazed with the pupils’ efforts.

He said: “We are delighted to run this Bake Off and have been really impressed by the standard and quality of baking from these young people. They are great ambassadors for their schools.”

The Rotary Club donated a glass trophy for the winners, a commemorative apron for each pupil, and £25 for each school to go towards ingredients.

Sue Campbell said: “This is the event's first year and because it was a success, we hope to repeat it next year, with more schools taking part.”
