BAKING stars of the future whipped up a recipe for success in the first leg of a cooking competition.

Pupils from Hurworth School, Longfield Academy and Polam Hall worked in teams to produce a batch of identical cupcakes and a sponge cake for judging.

And members of Darlington Rotary Club marked each bake on its consistency, appearance and taste, as well as adding points for teamwork.

Next week sees the talented students take on Christmas cookies, which will be baked and decorated in Darlington College’s kitchens before an overall winner is announced.

President of Darlington Rotary Club, David Heaton, said: “As a Rotary Club, we’re very interested in promoting young people’s interests and bringing out their leadership qualities.

“We work with young people to get them to enjoy learning and experiencing new things and this is great example of what they can achieve.

“It’s an important part of what the club does and we’re very impressed with how articulate and enthusiastic these pupils are.”

The judges from the Rotary Club, Darlington College and The Northern Echo will meet again on Monday to reveal the winner after the final round of baking.
