A PASSENGER has died after a car hit a lamp post.

The 27-year-old man, who has not been named but is from the Gateshead area, was the passenger in a black Peugeot 206 that hit a lamp post on the A692 at Moorside, Consett, County Durham, at about 6am on Saturday (November 28).

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Durham Police are investigating the crash. Anyone who saw the incident or the car in the minutes beforehand is asked to call the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number, 101, extension 75-2159.

Police have released no further details of the incident.

Residents have fought a campaign to improve safety on the A692, calling for the re-installation of lights.

Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Hogg pledged to look into the issue and North-West Durham MP Pat Glass said it had been “stupid” to remove lights on the bank, a walking route for pupils to and from Consett Academy.

Durham County Council said the decision was subject to extensive consultation and street lights were only removed where it was safe to do so.
