A BULL had to be shot by police after escaping from a field near the A1 on Saturday (November 21).
Police were called at about 1pm when reports came in that the bull was heading for the north-bound carriageway between junction 59 and 60, from Darlington to Newton Aycliffe.
A police spokesman confirmed the road was closed for about 40 minutes and both the police helicopter and firearms officers were called to the scene as the animal was jumping fences and out of control.
He said the bull never got onto the motorway but had to be shot as a precaution after getting stuck in a ditch and becoming distressed.
No one else was hurt during the incident and the road reopened at about 1.40pm.
