Harriers made an excellent start to this season's Young Athletes League when the first round was staged at Darlington.

The series gives youngsters the chance to try their hand at a range of disciplines at both track and field. Lorna Goldsmith took first place in the U-17 women's long jump and the B 100m and 200m.

Verity Pratt was first in the U-17 women's 800m and also won the 300m hurdles. Faye Bowles was a double 100m and 200m winner in the same age group.

Leah Kennedy won the U-15 girls' high jump, was second in the long jump and also won the B javelin. Rebecca Noble was second in the U-17 javelin, fourth in the shot and won the B 800m.

Kate Blaylock won the U-17 women's 300m hurdles and was second in the triple jump. Danielle Luetchford won the javelin and was fourth in the B 100m.

Beth Ward was fourth in the U-15 girls' discus and second in the B 1500m. Poppy Crooks was fourth in the 100m and second in the B 200m at the same age group.

Heather Woodward was fourth in the U-15 girls' 200m. Nicole Marsh won the U-15 800m and was second in the shot. Rosie Clark was second in the U-15 1500m and third in the B long jump.

Victoria Marsh won the U-15 girls' B 800m. Bethan Bowles was third in the U-13 girls' 75m and 150m and second in the shot. Heather Woodward was second in the U-15 girls' B high jump and won the B shot.

Kimberley Luetchford was second in the U-13 girls' B 75m and Sophie Hird was third in the U-13 girls' 70m hurdles. Becky Ward was second in the U-13 girls' high jump and third in the long jump.

Paul Clifford won the U-15 boys' discus and was second in the 400m and 800m. Paul Jefferson was third in the U-17 men's 100m, 200m and shot. Andrew Clifford won the U-17 men's 400m hurdles, was second in the 400m flat and second in the B discus.

Michael Parry was fourth in the U-17 men's 800m. Robert Fox was third in the U-17 men's B 100 and won both the B triple jump and long jump. Andrew Jordan won the B 400m hurdles.

Andrew Jones was third in the U-17 men's long jump and won the B triple jump and was second in the shot. Josh Phillips was second in the U-15 boys' 1500m and third in the high jump. James Pottinger was second in the U-15 boys' javelin and third in the 100m.

Michael Noble was third in the U-15 boys' long jump and second in the B 800m. Niall Kennedy had second places in the U-13 boys' 75m hurdles, shot and high jump.

In the 4 x 100m relays, Darlington were second in the U-17 men's race, third in the U-15 boys' race, first in the U-17 women's race, fourth in the U-15 girls' event and second in the U-13 girls' race. The match was won by Sheffield, with Morpeth second, Darlington third and Pudsey and Bramley fourth.

The senior athletes have been in action on the roads as the season gathers pace. A large contingent took part in the Tees Barrage 10k at Middlesbrough over the Bank Holiday weekend. Race winner was Mark Hood, of Sunderland, in 31 mins 58 secs.

Jack Mason was first home in 11th place in 38 mins 30 secs, followed by Ronnie Read in 15th with 39:13. Steve Hutchinson was 20th in 40:03 and Kevin Grainger 57th in 42:48.

Linda Noble was 69th in 43:27, Dave Weston was 88th in 45:09, Jackie Nicholls was 166th in 50:48 and Brian Burdon was 172nd in 51:09. George Prince was 206th in 53:16, Joanne Tonkin was 240th in 55:47 and Annette Hubery was 299th in 63:54.

The second round of the Black Sheep series was incorporated into the Ripon 10 mile race last weekend. Conditions were ideal for the hilly circuit, which has several off-road sections.

Graham Bell was 35th in 71:11, Linda Noble 56th in 73:52 and Dave Wardman 125th in 84:50. The race was won by Thirsk and Sowerby's Gary Dunn in 53:50.
