THE region will thank its war veterans for their brave service in a major event this summer.

Durham City's Palace Green and town hall will be taken over by vintage military vehicles, a large display of military memorabilia, bands and street entertainers for the veterans' day, on Sunday, July 8.

The new Mayor of Durham will host a reception in the city's castle, and veterans will be honoured with the presentation of a badge.

Anyone who enlisted in the UK Forces between 1945 and 1984 is eligible to receive the gold, blue and white lapel badge carrying the inscription HM Armed Forces Veteran.

Current Durham Mayor Jeff Lodge, who served with the Royal Engineers, is a trustee of the Royal British Legion and has already received his badge, said: "At long last, the Government has realised that we who served in the Armed Forces are due a vote of thanks.

"The Veterans Badge is a fair recognition and is proudly worn, and quite rightly so.

"I urge veterans to look into the matter as soon as possible."

The event is being funded by the Ministry of Defence and staged by Durham City Vision events team.

Kate James, from Durham City Vision, said: "This is a rare chance to publicly honour some of the veterans from our region in the historic setting of Durham City.

"I hope that this call to action will encourage all those eligible to come forward and receive their badges."

Children's activities, including an inflatable laser dome, a climbing wall, camouflage face painting and a veterans' quiz, will also take place on the day.

A brass band will perform during the morning, followed by a military pipe band in the afternoon, and veterans' organisations will also be represented.

Anyone wanting to receive the Veterans Badge must apply in advance. Application forms can be obtained from Durham's tourist information centre, on 0191-384-3720.
