A BOYS’ football team is doing so well this season that it has just gained a new sponsor.
Byers Green under 10s boys’ team – known as the Hawks – has been winning games regularly in the Durham-based non-competitive Russell Foster League and has recently been given a new kit by Jonathan Clegg of Willington-based EDE Electrics.
One of a number of teams belonging to Byers Green Football Club, the boys train at Whitworth Park School in Spennymoor.
The club was founded in 1993 by North East philanthropist, Peter Storey, with the aim of getting local children off the streets and into playing football.
Paul Lauder, team coach, said: “The Hawks are doing really well. They have won their last seven games and drawn one. In our first game of the season we won 17-0, which was very encouraging.”
The club is run entirely by volunteers and is governed by a committee which includes chairman, Mark Munro, vice chairman, Sean Harker, club secretary, Louise Hawks and treasurer, Barbara Harker.
