ONE of the region's most unusual buildings will open its doors to give visitors a look behind the scenes.
Maintenance work will be carried out on the engine room at Souter Lighthouse, near Marsden, Sunderland, to clean and oil the compressor and foghorn.
Visitors will be invited to join the National Trust volunteers carrying out the work, which will start on Monday.
Further open days will take place throughout the summer.
Normal admission charges of £4.40 for adults and £2.80 for children apply.
The lighthouse, one of the first in the world to be powered by electricity, was built in the 19th Century after several shipwrecks on the coast, which accounted for 20 vessels in one year.
