THE Liberal Democrats held on to Durham City Council after their surprise win in 2003 ended years of Labour dominance.
They ended up with one more seat than last time with a total of 30 while Labour mustered 17, the same tally as four years ago. The Independents finished a seat down with three.
Deerness ward's two seats switched from Labour to Liberal Democrat but there was consolation for Labour who won the three seats in Pelaw and Gilesgate, near the city centre, which were held by the Independents (one) and Liberal Democrats.
