A CHARITY stalwart who donates the proceeds from his bric-a-brac stall to community causes has raised £1,100 for a young mother with terminal cervical cancer.

Jade Pateman, 21, from Shildon, County Durham, received the devastating diagnosis in May and was told she had only 18 months to two years to live.

Her bravery and determination to enjoy life with her two-year-old son Oscar inspired her family and friends to set up a charity, Jade and Oscars Angels, to secure funds for the toddler’s future.

Groups, individuals and business across the region answered the call, organising everything from open mic nights and fun days, to charity auctions to raise cash.

And when “Honest” John Hilton from Miss Pateman’s hometown of Newton Aycliffe heard about the appeal he was keen to help and donated £1,100 from his bric-a-brac stall proceeds.

Miss Pateman, who is campaigning for the minimum cervical cancer screening age to be lowered from 25 to 20, said: “I couldn’t believe it when my family told me John had raised £1,100. He is an old family friend. My family has known him for years.

“He’s a lovely man and I’d like to say a big thank you to him.”

Mr Hilton said: “I have known Jade since she was a little girl. She was a lovely little lass and now she is a lovely lady. I just hope and pray that something can be done to help her.”

Mr Hilton’s stall, a registered charity known as John’s Aycliffe Community Kitty, recently moved to the MoreTime Furniture Help Scheme and Cafe at Sapphire House, the headquarters of the charity Disc in Horndale Avenue, Newton Aycliffe.

Since its launch in 2007, he has raised more than £100,000 for community causes and the move from the town centre has hampered his efforts, with £4,000 secured for the kitty in the first four months.

Other causes to have received donations recently include Great Aycliffe Cancer Support Group, the Acorn Players and Newton Aycliffe Junior Football Club.
