THIS year's Ripon Young Musician of the Year competition has taken place.

There were more than 80 entries for this year's competition, 30 up on last year's record entry.

The competition, launched in 2001, is open to people aged under 19 living in or going to school in the HG4 postcode area.

The judge was clarinettist Lesley Schatzberger, whose recording of Brahms' Clarinet Quintet earned enthusiastic reviews.

The contest had seven classes divided into sections. For the first time, it included a class for two skills, with the chance to play two instruments or to play and sing.

The winners were Sam Duffield (trumpet and voice), Emily Jennings (piano and voice), Imogen Schofield (flute), Jonathan Pitts (piano), Harry Brownlie (horn) and Emily Reed (voice).

The winners and most promising competitors played at Ripon Cathedral yesterday lunchtime.
