A TEACHER who runs a drop-in cafe for young people has had her work recognised by the Government.
Andrea Benson became involved with the free cafe at Colburn recreation centre, near Catterick Garrison, ten years ago.
The venue, set up through the Fair Play for Kids charity, is open to those aged ten to 17 four evenings a week and provides activities such as sports, pool, cooking and arts and crafts, which attract up to 40 young people a night.
Mrs Benson, 31, was delighted to receive a Taking a Stand award from the Government's Respect scheme, and travelled to Birmingham to be presented with a certificate.
In the scheme, councils and other groups work together to discourage anti-social behaviour and promote neighbourly communities. Mrs Benson said: "I was shocked and surprised to learn that I had won the award.
"I am very proud. It makes it all worthwhile and it is good for the kids who come along to the cafe."
Mrs Benson, who is head of year seven at Risedale Community College and runs its inclusion unit, was nominated for the award by community police officer PC Di Smith.
