A TEENAGE dad is working towards a brighter future for himself and his family.
James Beal is one of the first to benefit from the Teenage Parent Apprenticeship Programme, a pilot initiative by Durham County Council’s public health and economic regeneration departments.
The scheme encourages local firms to offer an apprenticeship to teenage parents from County Durham by giving them advice and up to £4,500 towards the apprentice’s wages.
Contributions can also be made towards equipment, travel and childcare costs to support young people as they start a career.
The 17-year-old, from School Aycliffe, secured an electro-mechanical apprenticeship with DNV GL, a works with the oil and gas industry, at Chilton.
Councillor Neil Foster, cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: "With youth unemployment an issue in the county it’s vital that the council continues to support the next generation into work, helping to grow the economy and prospects of the entire county.”
Councillor Lucy Hovvels, cabinet member for adult and health services, added: "It is important that if young people do become parents, they get the support they need to give their children the best start in life and contribute towards a successful future for their family.”
