TWO Teesdale artists have been appointed to create a series of works to mark important views throughout the dale.

Victoria Brailsford and Ant Macari were selected by arts organisation ARTworks in Teesdale after an open appeal.

They were asked to prepare several initial designs for artwork which would mark, in some way, up to 12 views across the area defined by the Heart of Teesdale Landscape Partnership.

The views were selected through consultation with the community, in conjunction with the Heart of Teesdale and with ARTworks in Teesdale managers Judy Caplin and Jill Cole.

The artists then presented their ideas at an exhibition at The Witham, in Barnard Castle, in July and invited members of the public to comment.

Ms Brailsford has now been commissioned to develop her ideas for three-dimensional cast objects while Mr Macari will produce a collection of illustrated ‘haiku’ – short, three-line written pieces, which were originally a Japanese form of poetry, and later developed as an English poetic response to a fleeting moment in nature.

The poems will be published in a limited edition bound sketchbook early next year.

“We are delighted with the outcome of the process so far,” said Ms Caplin. “We feel that people will really enjoy the work produced by both of these artists.

“The combination of sculpture, word sketches and a digital element is a genuinely innovative way of experiencing the Teesdale landscape.”
