A FOOD and clothing bank was set up in Durham’s Market Place by union members during the run-up to the Miners’ Gala.
Unite Community in Durham created the collection point to show solidarity between people taking part in the annual event and those struggling desperately to make ends meet.
It followed the example set in Glasgow’s George Square after the referendum last year, which saw hundreds of bags of shopping left for foodbanks as a reminder of the continuing UK government austerity measures.
People in Durham were urged to donate anything from a single tin of beans to a pair of socks to somebody in need.
A Unite Community spokesman said: "Both the County Durham food bank and Socialist Clothing Bank rely entirely on the public making donations.
“We are hoping that with their generosity The Big Collection before The Big Meeting will really help to make a difference to the wellbeing of those hit hardest by austerity.”
Unite Community is the section of Unite the Union for people not in work.
