A SUPERMARKET ran wild this morning (Thursday, July 2) when it held a trolley dash in aid of charity.

The Tesco store on Tindale Crescent, St Helen Auckland, saw four of its staff filling their baskets in a 15 minute mad-cap race around the store.

The food collected will go to the Trussell Trust food bank, which works with churches and communities to open new food banks across the UK.

William Moody, 21, from Cockton Hill, Sarah Costello, 40, from Bishop Auckland, Hayley McGlade, 21, from West Auckland and Ben Wilson, also from Bishop Auckland, who all work at the store, each did a Supermarket-Sweep-style trolley-fill, and bagged £137 worth of goods to go to needy families.

The dash is part of a three day event, ending on Saturday morning with each dash starting at 9am.

John Bailey, the store’s community champion in charge of fundraising, said: “It’s for a worthy cause. Although there weren’t many customers about that time of the morning, the staff had a great time.”

The store hopes to enough money to buy 10,000 meals to help needy families this year through events like these.

Its next fundraiser will be a charity football match on July 19 at Crook Football Club where teams from the Bishop Auckland and Durham Tesco stores will compete to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK.
