A VICAR is embarking on a musical marathon by singing more than 600 hymns to raise funds for charity and his church.

The vicar of St Cuthbert’s Church, in Darlington, Reverend Robert Williamson is singing all 628 hymns in the Common Praise hymn book as part of a sponsored hymnathon.

He will serenade the congregation for two hours every day this week, finishing on Friday – his 60th birthday.

“We are singing 125 hymns every day, except for Friday when we will be singing 128,” he said.

“It feels good, I am enjoying it and I am learning some new hymns as well.

“I’ve called the challenge Singing in the Sixties, because the final day of the challenge with be my 60th birthday.

“As far as I know this challenge has never been attempted by a vicar.”

The challenge will raise funds for both Christian Aid, as well as the church.

“I have supported Christian Aid all my life because I believe in a fairer deal for the poor. My lifelong interest in Christian Aid’s work has prompted me to do this sponsored sing,” he added.

“I also want to raise money to support St Cuthbert’s Church building which includes replacing the heating system, and making the church more available for concerts and exhibitions, as well as worship.”

To sponsor Rev Williamson, call into the church or send money to The Vicarage, 26 Upsall Drive, Darlington.

People are welcome to sing with Rev Williamson at 11am and 1pm at the church.
